Meningitis Research Foundation

We fund pioneering scientific research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis; raise awareness of the symptoms of meningitis and provide life-saving information to health professionals and the public; and provide practical and emotional support to the 3,200 families affected by meningitis each year in the UK.

Did you know...

For every 10 people who contract meningitis, 1 will die and 2 will be left with life-changing after-effects, such as limb amputations, brain damage, hearing and sight loss, or cerebral palsy. Few illnesses in 21st century Britain can cause such damage with such speed and without warning to otherwise healthy people.

Since our establishment in 1989, we have played an instrumental role in helping to reduce death and disability from meningitis wherever it exists – and our international impact is growing year-on-year. We currently have five research projects in Africa where the need is greatest, to help improve primary healthcare and reduce the high levels of child mortality from preventable diseases, such as meningitis.
