Our Home & Garden industry expert Matt Jones, shares his insight on how to keep your gardening costs down in 2025:
"Gardening is such a rewarding hobby but there are a few myths that do seem to put some people off - it’s expensive and you need land. Of course, both can be true, but it doesn’t have to be. All you need is soil, seeds, sunlight and water - so you could grow on a window sill if that’s all you have. I’ve grown chillis, herbs - like basil and coriander and even tomatoes on my window sills. To keep costs down I’ve used soil from my front verge, plastic food containers as propagation trays and milk cartons as plant pots. Seeds can be acquired cheaply too, from as little as 50p a packet(even less if you buy out of season in clearance sales - make sure you check expiry dates) from supermarkets and places like Wilko and The Range. If you spend a little more on heirloom seeds you can collect seeds from your crop, plant them next year and so on - I did this year with some calendula plants that were growing at my allotment, which will end up saving me quite a bit of money.
