How to save money on gym memberships and fitness classes

Written by Stephanos Charalambous | 27 August 2024

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a priority for many people, myself included. Going to the gym regularly keeps me in shape, boosts my energy levels, and improves my overall health. But I know from experience that the costs associated with gym memberships and fitness classes can add up quickly. Thankfully, I have discovered that achieving your fitness goals is possible without breaking the bank.

According to a 2024 report by the Leisure Database Company, over 10.5 million people in the UK hold gym memberships, contributing to an industry worth nearly six billion annually. Attending a gym or participating in fitness classes has become popular for improving physical health and overall well-being. I’m well aware of the benefits of regular exercise, and there is strong evidence that improved cardiovascular health, stronger muscles and bones, enhanced mental health, and better weight management all contribute to a more fulfilling life. It can also reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

However, despite the compelling benefits, the average gym membership cost in the UK can be a significant financial commitment. Monthly fees range from £20 at budget gyms to over £100 at premium fitness centres. Additionally, I have noticed that boutique fitness classes, such as spin, yoga, and Pilates, often have high price tags. With costs quickly adding up, it can be challenging to maintain a consistent fitness routine. However, achieving your fitness goals doesn’t have to result in a hefty price tag.

By being strategic and resourceful, you can save money on gym memberships and fitness classes without compromising your health and wellness. Whether negotiating fees, utilising free resources, or investing in home fitness, there are numerous ways to stay fit and financially savvy, ensuring you get the most value for your hard-earned money!

Choose the Right Gym

Selecting the right gym will positively impact your fitness experience and monthly outlay. It’s unlikely that you’ll find the perfect gym the first time, so do your homework and don’t be worried about switching to another location if it’s not delivering what you want.

Research and Compare

Not all gyms are created equal. Research and compare different gyms in your area to enjoy significant membership savings. Look for promotions, discounts, and membership perks that provide added value. Some gyms I have attended offered lower rates during off-peak hours, while special discounts for students, seniors or corporate employees are often available.

Pay-As-You-Go

If, like me, you have experienced periods when you need to take a break from the gym, you should consider gyms that offer pay-as-you-go options instead of committing to a long-term contract. It’s estimated that at least 50% of gym memberships get little or no usage, so greater flexibility will save you money if your schedule or fitness goals change.

Negotiate Membership Fees

Don’t be afraid to negotiate your membership fee. Although gyms don’t openly advertise special prices, many have the flexibility to offer discounts and cheap gym passes. Gyms are like any other business in as much as they want your custom, so negotiating wherever possible is a good idea. It worked for me when I presented competing offers from cheap gyms near me.

Take Advantage of Free Trials and Classes

Who doesn’t love a freebie? Attending the gym is integral to my well-being, so I don’t mind paying a fair monthly price. However, opportunities to get free fitness must not be sniffed at, and with a little investigation, you will likely find plenty of gym savings on your doorstep.

Free Trials

Many gyms like Village Gyms, Nuffield Health and Lifestyle Fitness offer free trials as an incentive to sign up. Gym trials traditionally range from a day to a week and are an opportunity to test out facilities and classes before financially committing to a subscription. I find a gym’s crowd and vibe are hugely important, so trying before you buy makes a lot of sense. It sometimes results in a gym membership discount, too!

Community and Online Classes

Group fitness sessions are great for meeting like-minded individuals and forming friendships. Look out for free exercise classes offered by community centres, parks or online platforms. YouTube and fitness apps like Nike Training Club and FitOn offer high-quality exercise programs for free. You could even start your own class and get all your mates involved.

See Your Doctor

GPs can sometimes prescribe free gym memberships if you have specific health requirements. Depending on what is available locally, it’s more likely that you will be referred to a local leisure centre for free membership and advice on getting and staying active. Not-for-profit leisure centres offer fitness deals for people on certain benefits like Universal Credit, housing benefits and income support.

Opt for Budget-Friendly Alternatives

The cheapest gym option may require thinking outside of the box. I love the variety of workouts I can do in the gym, but I supplement with regular exercise in other environments. Whether swimming or yoga, there are plenty of budget-friendly gym alternatives for you to try.

Local Community Venues

Community and public health centres often offer fitness facilities and classes at a fraction of the cost of private gyms. The venues usually offer a range of cheap well-being activities, from swimming to yoga, that cater to all fitness levels. Getting to know your local area is a good idea so you don’t miss out on free wall pilates and other budget-friendly options.

University Gyms

If you’re a student, graduate or local resident, check if your university offers discounted rates at its gym. Its facilities are likely to have excellent equipment and resources, something the wider community may be able to enjoy. If you are getting by on a student budget, there are many gyms with student discounts, including The Gym Group and PureGym.

Home Gym Equipment

Investing in basic home gym equipment like dumbbells, resistance bands, and a yoga mat can be more cost-effective in the long run. Discount codes for companies like Argos, Gym King, and Sports Direct can help you purchase affordable gym equipment. Subscribe to online fitness services like Beachbody on Demand, Peloton Digital, and Yoga with Adriene to access diverse workouts at a lower cost than most gym memberships.

Utilise Employee Health Benefits and Member Perks

How often are we guilty of not fully utilising what we already have? Take a closer look at your gym subscription to see if there are benefits you’re not using. Likewise, do you have private health coverage with your employer? It could be that a money-saving solution is closer than you think!

Health Insurance Benefits

Many companies offer wellness programs that include gym membership discounts. For example, my Vitality Insurance unlocks up to 50% off monthly gym membership fees at selected gyms, including Virgin Active. There is also a Bupa gym discount, so check with your HR department to see if your employer has partnerships with local gyms.

Group Savings

Gyms and fitness studios like Virgin Active and David Lloyd offer group discounts. Sign up with a group of friends or family members to take advantage of a gym discount. Your gym membership may have a ‘plus one’ benefit, which entitles someone to occasional free or discounted entry. I have previously shared the perk with family who simply want a cheap gym pass without the commitment.

Referral Programs

It’s a no-brainer to check if your gym has a rewards-based referral program. Most gyms do, and bringing in new members will earn you discounts on your membership fees. If there is increased competition in the local area, you should find that new member incentives are incredibly generous. Getting a cheap gym trainer to aid your fitness goals may even be possible.

Seasonal and Promotional Offers

As the Savoo Sports & Outdoors money-saving editor, I know that seasonal sales and voucher codes can help you save on practically everything, including gym memberships and fitness classes. Savoo has a category devoted to Sports & Outdoors deals, and here are some further tips.

Black Friday and New Year Deals

Expect boosted promotional offers during major sales events like Black Friday and New Year's. Fitness First regularly has up to half-price discounts, while Fitness Superstore discount codes are always available if you prefer to work out from home. Gyms often offer significant discounts at the start of the year to attract new members and coincide with people making fitness New Year’s resolutions.

Off-Peak Memberships

Gyms sometimes offer reduced rates for off-peak memberships. Working out during non-peak hours can save you money, so if your schedule allows, it’s certainly something worth considering. Accessing the gym at the quietest times also ensures that you don’t need to worry about the availability of treadmills, cross trainers and other popular equipment. Grab a PureGym discount or alternative today.

Switch for Better Rates

Be cautious of long-term contracts that can be difficult and expensive to cancel. Opt for month-to-month memberships whenever possible, and always look for a better deal. While you may be comfortable where you are, is there a cheaper monthly membership at the gym down the road? It’s always good to remember that loyalty rarely pays with subscriptions!

I hope I have demonstrated that achieving your fitness goals with gym memberships and fitness classes doesn’t have to drain your finances. Remember, the key to successful money-saving is consistency and making informed choices. Regular fitness makes me more organised and goal-oriented, so I am passionate about promoting its benefits during these challenging times. Happy saving and happy training!
