The connection between love and memory is brought even more into focus for events like Valentine’s Day. Memories are the foundation of our closest relationships like the first “I love you," a shared laugh, or decades of cherished moments. Yet, for those affected by dementia, treasured memories can slip away far too soon. With nearly one million people in the UK living with dementia, Alzheimer's Research UK is on a mission to revolutionize the way we understand and treat this heartbreaking condition.

Alison and Frank Littleford have faced profound changes since Frank's Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2020. Once a passionate musician, Frank now struggles with everyday memories. His wife Alison describes the heartbreak of watching him fade in the video.

What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, an umbrella term for a range of conditions that cause progressive decline in brain function, affecting memory, thinking, and communication. Alzheimer’s occurs when abnormal proteins build up in the brain, leading to the death of nerve cells and the breakdown of vital connections. Early symptoms may appear as mild forgetfulness, but the disease advances to disrupt a person’s independence, personality, and ability to recognise loved ones.

Other types of dementia impact the brain in different ways. Vascular dementia, the second most prevalent type, occurs when reduced blood flow damages brain cells, often following strokes or small vessel disease. Dementia with Lewy bodies is linked to abnormal protein deposits in the brain, leading to symptoms such as hallucinations, sleep disturbances, and fluctuations in alertness. Meanwhile, frontotemporal dementia (FTD) primarily affects the frontal and temporal lobes, initially causing personality changes and difficulties with language.

Each form of dementia progresses differently, making early diagnosis and tailored care essential. While dementia is often associated with older age, an estimated 70,800 people in the UK are living with the condition before the age of 65, highlighting that it can affect younger individuals too.

About Alzheimer's Research UK

Alzheimer’s Research UK was founded in 1992 in response to the desperately growing need for dedicated dementia research. With funding for Alzheimer’s and related diseases lagging far behind that of other serious conditions, a group of scientists and supporters recognized this gap and set out to drive forward pioneering research. Today, they are the country’s leading charity dedicated to funding scientific breakthroughs in preventing, diagnosing, and treating dementia.

The charity has invested over £159 million into groundbreaking studies, supporting the brightest minds in neuroscience to find treatments that will one day make dementia a thing of the past. Their work spans every stage of the research process, from investigating the earliest signs of dementia in the brain to clinical trials testing new treatments. Alzheimer’s Research UK ensures that hope turns into reality by funding innovative projects and collaborating with experts across the globe.

Whether through fundraising, volunteering, spreading awareness, or buying merchandise, supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK means another step towards a world free from the heartbreak of dementia. You could also select Alzheimer’s Research UK as your chosen charity to donate effortlessly while saving on your online shopping with Savoo.
